What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships refer to on-the-job training leading to nationally recognised qualifications. The length of the programme varies depending on the course level and the experience you already have in your job role. An Apprenticeship is essentially a set of qualifications called a ‘framework’ developed by Sector Skills Councils.

Most Apprenticeship frameworks follow a standard format that comprises:

Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF)
This is the competence based element of the framework which describes what you are expected to do within your particular occupation to be deemed ‘competent’. It is a portfolio made up of evidence that proves you have the skills to do your job effectively.

Technical Certificate
This will teach you the basics of your job role and also teach you the legislation and laws surrounding the  world of work. As well as this, there will be work related projects for you to complete—your Assessor will advise you on what your projects should be about and what to include in these. Once your Assessor believes you have enough knowledge about your job role, you may need to sit online assessments to test your knowledge. These assessments are nothing to worry about as you will not be asked to do them until your Assessor believes you are capable of passing easily.

Functional Skills
While you are doing your Apprenticeship, you will also be undertaking Functional Skills in Maths and English—these will run alongside your QCF and Technical certificate (if you are undertaking an Apprenticeship in Business Administration, ITQ, Team Leading or Childcare you may also  need to complete a Functional Skill in ICT). The duration of your Functional Skills will depend upon your current literacy and numeracy levels. You will receive tutoring for your Functional Skills which will reflect the English and Maths you might need to use within your job role and these will be assessed by a series of multiple choice tests. As with the Technical Certificate, you will not be expected to sit your Functional Skills tests until your Assessor believes you are ready. Depending on your prior qualifications you may not need to complete your Functional Skills—your Assessor will be able to confirm what you need to complete at your induction visit.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
Each framework must include a requirement for Apprentices to develop knowledge and understanding about the world of employment, including the rights and responsibilities of workers, the role of their organisation within the wider industry, the effect of public law and policy on industry and the role of the safe learner concept.

Who are they for?
Apprenticeships are open to all ages over 16, whether you are just leaving school, have been working for years or are seeking to start a new career. You need to have been a resident in the EU for three years and not be in full time education.

What are the benefits of being an Apprentice?
You'll get recognised qualifications and full support during your training. You will also be earning a wage while you learn, and will have access to a higher qualification at the end leading to better performance at work, improved personal development and career prospects.

What will I earn?
The minimum wage for an Apprentice is £3.30 an hour, however, we do encourage businesses to reward good performance through an increase in wages. If you are already employed your wage will not change.
