Multiply is a Government-funded programme to help adults improve their numeracy skills. Launched as part of the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) programme, by the Department for Education (DfE),
the Multiply programme is aimed at improving adult numeracy through the provision of online learning resources and tuition.
Numeracy is the ability to understand and use maths in daily life, home, and work. Whether that be budgeting money, helping children with homework, mixing hair dye, measuring building materials or even setting up in business. People who improve their numeracy skills are more likely to be in employment, have higher wages, and better wellbeing. If you feel nauseous when thinking about numbers, you’re not alone! UK government statistics suggest that 17 million adults – 49% of the working-age population of England – have the numeracy level that we expect of primary school children.
There are a few eligibility criteria that a learner needs to meet in order to qualify for the additional support.
- Lincolnshire residents aged 19+
- Individuals who may want to develop numeracy skills for work or progression.
- Individuals that want to brush up and develop their numeracy skills for everyday life.
- You can take part in the National Numeracy Challenge which aims to give you an accurate picture of your everyday maths skills through a few simple to answer questions.
Funding for the Multiply programme is channelled via Mayoral Combined Authorities and Local Councils and Steadfast has secured contracts to deliver this exciting new programme across Lincolnshire, for Lincolnshire County Council.
Provision under the Multiply Programme is offered either as embedded numeracy support through the vocational training that Steadfast deliver (for instance in construction, adult care or warehousing, where math is relevant on a daily basis), as well as standalone courses under a number of relevant themes, which will help to increase learners’ confidence with math and complement and enrich the individual’s personal and professional development. The specific course themes are as follows:
Maths for Life
Everyday Maths designed to increase learners’ confidence and personal development and helping them to get ready for work – including sessions on reading bank statements, working out discounts at the supermarket, making sense of train timetables, calculating bills at a restaurant/café or measuring volumes for administering medicine to children or those in care.
Money Management
Helping with budgeting and managing personal finance, including ‘better-off-in-work’/benefits calculations and dealing with Credit Card debt
Maths for Jobs
Get the right numeracy skills for different career paths, including Construction, Logistics, Business Admin, Hospitality, Retail, Adult Care and Education. Numeracy sessions cover practical application of numeracy and include supporting jobseekers, as well as those in employment and sole traders to improve their understanding and confidence with day-to-day practical math exercises e.g. ordering stock; using a till for work in retail and hospitality; calculating distance and storage capacities for the warehousing/logistics industry; knowing cubes and cuboids, length/height/width calculations for construction, as well as fractions and percentages, handling cash, bank reconciliation, invoicing processes, reconciling accounts and VAT.
Family Maths
Supporting children with homework and shopping smart. Sessions include interactive number games that parents can teach their children, e.g. coin and value recognition, measuring ingredients when baking together, rounding up/down exercises and working out weekly/monthly income based on hourly rates when applying for jobs etc.
Courses are delivered on a daily basis (Mon-Fri) between 1-3pm
