Senior healthcare support workers play a crucial role in providing clinical, therapeutic, and diagnostic care in various healthcare settings. They work under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered healthcare professional to support them in delivering high-quality and compassionate health and care services. A senior healthcare support worker may specialise in one of the following occupational options:
- adult nursing support
- maternity support
- theatre support
- mental health support
- children and young people support
- allied health profession therapy support
- diagnostic imaging support.
They will provide clinical, therapeutic, or diagnostic care as per the requirements of their chosen speciality.
During their apprenticeship, the individual will gain the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for their chosen role and industry. Below are examples of the subject areas to aid them in this effort:
Core Occupation Duties include:
- promoting the health and wellbeing of individuals
- monitoring their physical and mental health
- maintaining safety and security
- contributing to the quality of services and developing one's own skills and knowledge.
Optional Duties include:
- Adult nursing
- Maternity support
- Theatre support
- Mental health support
- Children and young people support
- Allied health profession therapy support
- Diagnostic imaging support
This EPA has 2 assessment methods.
- Assessment Method 1: Observation of practice
- Assessment Method 2: Professional Discussion
Community support worker, Imaging support worker, Maternity support worker, Mental health support worker, Senior healthcare support worker, Theatre assistant, Therapy assistant.

- Apprentices may be required to undertake Level 2 in English & Maths
- Learners will be supported to achieve the Care Certificate
- Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support
On completion, the apprentice will be able to apply for the appropriate level of professional membership aligned with this apprenticeship, dependent on the qualification chosen
Learners may be required to undertake the Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service process and provide the result prior to starting.
