Pride Month

Pride Month is an annual celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community as a chance to come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. It’s a month to highlight the movement for rights and celebrate the culture of the LGBTQIA+ community.

This month is about acceptance, equality, celebrating the successes of the LGBTQIA+ community, its history and raising awareness of issues that affect them such as homophobia. Homophobic language and actions are used to abuse, insult, or discriminate against someone based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation, in a subtle or blatantly obvious way.

The LGBTQIA+ community worked hard to get to where they are today, and it shows a lot of courage on their behalf because they are being true to themselves and expressing themselves in the way that they want to.

Pride Month is celebrated in June because of how the holiday came around, which is because of The Stonewall riots in New York City in 1969. These riots were extremely important protests that changed gay rights for a lot of people around the world and allowed them to start expressing themselves the way they wanted to. On the one-year anniversary of this, thousands of people marched the streets of where the riots took place and it turned into America’s first gay pride parade, with the official chant of, “say it loud, gay is proud.”

Pride is a huge celebration of people coming together in love and in friendship to show how far LGBTQIA+ rights have come but also to show how in some places there’s still work to be done.

This month is dedicated to uplifting voices, celebrating the culture, and supporting rights of the LGBTQIA+ community.
