Cleaning hygiene operatives are responsible for providing a hygienically clean environment in which service users, staff, and other users can thrive, work, and develop. They work in various settings, including healthcare facilities where infection control and sanitation are crucial for the wellbeing of service users. Operatives work both independently and as part of a team, reporting to a cleaning supervisor or service leader. Their work may involve providing services outside of normal working hours and immediate responses throughout the day to maintain high levels of cleanliness and prevent the spread of diseases and viruses.
During their apprenticeship, the individual will gain the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required for their chosen role and industry. Below are examples of the subject areas to aid them in this effort:
Core Occupation Duties:
- Clean according to contract specifications and schedules
- Follow processes for out-of-scope requests
- Prioritise workloads
- Comply with safety and environmental policies,
- Use safe techniques and appropriate agents
- Monitor for pests
- Communicate with customers
- Dispose of materials legally
- Use data to support cleaning.
Healthcare Cleaning Operative duties
- Consider service users’ mental, emotional, and physical needs while cleaning
- Disassemble and reassemble healthcare service user equipment
- Provide routine and specialist hygienic cleaning and decontamination in line with healthcare cleanliness standards
Commercial Cleaning Operative duties
- Prepare area or items to be cleaned in line with clients’ instructions and contract requirements
- Deliver routine hygienic cleaning of the commercial environment in line with local standards, policies, guidelines, and operating procedures
This EPA has 3 assessment methods.
- Assessment Method 1: Knowledge Test
- Assessment Method 2: Observation with Questioning
- Assessment Method 3: Interview

- Apprentices may be required to undertake Level 2 in English & Maths
- A British Sign Language (BSL) qualification is an alternative to the English qualification for those whose primary language is BSL
Healthcare Pathway: Work in healthcare settings like hospitals and care homes to maintain cleanliness levels, prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses, and follow National Healthcare Cleaning Standards.
Commercial Pathway: Operate in various settings like food premises, hotels, and offices, focusing on thorough cleaning for safety and hygiene to prevent the spread of micro-organisms and bacteria.
